wombat rehabilitation after injury

On 29 October 25 John Creighton delivered a very sick emaciated adult wombat who was suffering from territory bites and being flyblown.

Lucky for professionals and our treatment facility we could house him, give him long acting antibiotics under sedation, put him on a drip, give him Bravecto while he’s the most vulnerable to mange, and spray him liberally with a maggot killing solution.

All this work cost $230 just for one night! in terms of meds.

We are so honoured to give this animal the best treatment and we admire our Vets so much!

The hours spent monitoring this dear wombat are well worth it because they can die easily from exhaustion. These animals are so tenacious. Even on “deaths door” they will try to get home and can exhaust themselves to mortality. Some people call it capture myopathy or cardio myopathy but he wanted to go home after one night at our treatment facility. Bang bang bang on the door of our ICU room.

Lucky John could return in time and we put the animal in a stretcher and off to home he went.

He was spotted by his land owner grazing at night and the next day returning home to his stable. This animal is so clever he’s seeking comfort in a stable and the kindest landowner loves him there. She even places bedding and water bowl for him.

So sad the animals are fighting over burrows because many burrows are currently flooded with ground water and of course extensive housing interferes with their ancestral pathways.

While Southern Highlands Wildlife Sanctuary is pitching to gain infrastructure, we support them alias ( John Crieghton) from Wombat Care Bundanoon.

I am so honoured to work with John for years and years and for he to catch this big Wombats and deliver all the way to Mittagong, for us to treat is outstanding!

We wish John and his people all the best to gain adequate infrastructure for the native animals but in the meanwhile will support him no matter what !

The animals need this vital work and we need people and funds to help.
