Pre-release compounds for Wombats
They have their own burrow which never gets buried in because that’s dangerous. The soil can fall on top of them when they try to dig again. They get plenty of opportunity to dig because they build their own bedding chambers corridors etc. They love to renovate and expand the entrances and subterranean hallways. And of course they don’t dig up so it’s safe to keep them contained
We begin their burrow, which is under the subsoil by digging a with a crowbar and shovel.
It’s so important that the teenage wombats have their own burrow in their pre-release pen so they can remain cool, protected, safe and demonstrate natural behaviours such as digging. They are far too vulnerable without a burrow.
The rooftops of the shelters catch rainwater into low lying water troughs.
Their diet in care is oaten or ryegrass hay and horse feed such as “easy result “
Our pens are bigger than the minimal size as the code of practice regulates because they need more area for exploring and change of immediate environment.
These pens are all constructed with tennis court netting, aproned and pegged securely to the ground on both sides. We believe the animals should be able to look out into the world and meet other Wombats.
Our Wombats are content. So important to keep the feed up.
They also need regular application of Cydectin which builds the antibodies to create resistance to manage in the future.
We have more than 12 of these type of pens at our pre-Release Site as well as many others with beautiful landowners / properties who are so welcoming for our lovely Wombats.
These images just give you an idea. We could provide many more but this provides an insight into the workload and a template for anyone who wishes to do the same.
A very important step is to include Land owners who are keen to have Wombats on their property.
This enables the animals to have lots of variety clean compounds and safer places to be released
